When Good Type Goes Bad

This piece of type comes from a magnet advertising KU BEAR BUCKS. I feel the type is right for the logo but they ruined it when adding so many layers and outlines. I think a simple maroon outline would have been fine. Instead it looks like the letters are made to look 3D and then given a stroke as well as a maroon outline which in my opinion just doest look good and is just too much.

Interesting Type On Consumed Food Package

I had eaten this box of WHOPPERS this past week and when looking at the box i thought it classifies as interesting type. It has alot of characteristics such as the piece of candy replacing the 'O', the leading is different from one letter to another and some letters are not slightly tilted. Its just a fun looking, well designed,  and interesting type.

Rebus/Icon in Type

I chose this logo for "rebus/icon in type" because the dixie symbol replaces and represents the letter "x" in the word Dixie. Its an icon that represents a letter, and i thought that this was a good example of it.

Type As Art

I chose this logo as "Type as Art" because the 'S' in Dasani is stretched and look like a squiggle line as well as can be readable as an 'S'. It takes a letter and adds an artistic touch to the letter and type. Its Type as Art.

Inspirational Type

I chose this logo for the Phillies as "inspirational type" because in my opinion it just looks good and its well known. When you see this 'P' you know exactly what it stands for against any other. The construction of the letter is what makes it original and to me its inspirational in the fact that one letter can mean so much.

Good Typography

I feel that is logo and type is a good example of "Good Typography" because its eye catching, original, free flowing, and everything just works together. Nestle is an older company and has been around for awhile and besides there products there logo is very well known and the reason for that is because of its originality and easily able to identify over others.

Kerning

10/16/08:

I chose this flyer for kerning because it has alot of bad kerning. The first thing that caught my attention was the "drum circle" where the letters are poorly kerned as well as the day and date written below it.

BAD TYPE

10/9/08:

This picture came from a sign in my dorm. I chose this as bad typography. I think its bad type because i feel that its too distracting with the letters all cut apart and the stars in the letters. To me i think it just doesn't flow well and doesn't look good. Plus i think the letters are to far apart although with the font any closer i dont think you could be able to read it.

Hand Rendered

9/25/08:

I found this on the sidewalk outside the science building. This 'M' was part of a campus event  advertisement. I chose it because it was a clear looking letter and easy to read. I felt it was a good demonstration of hand rendered typography.

Historically influenced

9/18/08:
I found this letter ''X" in the building sign for "Dixon Hall". I felt this was a good representation of a historically influenced text because it is of roman lettering dated back to 100 BCE. Its a square capital which is a more formal type of lettering.

Natural

I found this letter 'S' in the layout of the sidewalks outside dorm building. I took this picture from my dorm room window. I chose this because i thought the letter stood out and that was easily noticed and defined.
